B. Todd Patterson

Mr. B. Todd Patterson is the founding partner of Patterson + Sheridan, LLP, a leading national intellectual property and complex litigation law firm headquartered in Houston. The firm assists companies in such technology sectors as energy, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, medical devices and procedures, finance, and business methods. In addition, Mr. Patterson serves as the lead partner for several of the firm’s major clients, whom he advises regarding portfolio development and management, patent analysis, licensing, litigation, and risk assessment. Mr. Patterson has served as an expert witness in multiple intellectual property cases and has successfully defended both patentees and third parties in reexamination and reissue proceedings. Mr. Patterson has been ranked among the Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers for over a decade and was named “Lawyer of the Year” in Houston for patent law by Best Lawyers in 2021.
Mr. Patterson graduated from Baylor University with a BS in biology in 1990 after leaving early to attend the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. He earned a law degree with honors from South Texas College of Law in 1993 and is licensed by the State Bar of Texas. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Houston Bar Association, and the American Intellectual Property Law Association. In addition, he serves on the regional board of Canine Companions for Independence and has served on the board of the South Texas College of Law Alumni Association.
Mr. Patterson and his wife, Amy, are active members of Second Baptist Church Houston, West campus. They have two daughters—Darian Elizabeth Schmeltekopf (BS ’13), whose husband, Eric, is a Baylor graduate, and Emily Kate Conner (BS ’18), whose husband, William “Billy,” also is a Baylor graduate—as well as three grandsons and a granddaughter.
