B. Todd Patterson

Mr. B. Todd Patterson is the founding partner of Patterson + Sheridan LLP, a nationally recognized intellectual property and complex litigation law firm headquartered in Houston. For more than three decades, he has advised companies across a broad range of technology sectors—including energy, biotechnology, medical devices, and advanced materials—on the development, protection, and strategic use of intellectual property assets.

Mr. Patterson serves as lead counsel for several of the firm’s major clients, advising executive leadership on matters involving risk, long-term strategy, and the alignment of intellectual property with broader business objectives. His practice spans portfolio development, patent analysis, licensing, litigation, and dispute resolution. He has also served as an expert witness in multiple intellectual property matters and has successfully represented both patentees and third parties in reexamination and reissue proceedings. Mr. Patterson has served on nonprofit and academic boards and brings a focus on stewardship, accountability, and mission-driven leadership. Mr. Patterson has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers for more than a decade and was named “Lawyer of the Year” in Houston for patent law by Best Lawyers in 2021. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Houston Bar Association, and the American Intellectual Property Law Association.

Mr. Patterson earned a BS in biology from Baylor University in 1990 and a law degree with honors from South Texas College of Law in 1993. He has served on the regional board of Canine Companions for Independence and on the board of the South Texas College of Law Alumni Association. He and his wife, Amy, are active members of Second Baptist Church Houston, West Campus. They have two daughters, both Baylor graduates, and five grandchildren.
