Andrew Arterbury
Dr. Andrew Arterbury serves as professor of Christian scriptures at Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary, having joined its faculty in 2007. He previously was an assistant professor of religion in Baylor’s Interdisciplinary Core from 2003 to 2007. While housed in Baylor’s Honors College, he also held a joint appointment in the religion department, where he was a member of the graduate faculty.
Dr. Arterbury graduated from Baylor with a Bachelor of Arts in religion and telecommunications in 1990 before attending Princeton Theological Seminary, where he earned a Master of Divinity in 1996 and a Master of Theology in 1997. Returning to Baylor, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in religion in 2003.
As a scholar of Christian scriptures, Dr. Arterbury has published numerous articles, book chapters, and books, including Reading Luke: A Literary and Theological Commentary (2019) and Entertaining Angels: Early Christian Hospitality in its Mediterranean Setting (2005). He also co-authored Engaging the Christian Scriptures: An Introduction to the Bible (2014, 2021). He was selected as the Senior Baylor Fellow for the 2019-2020 academic year and received a Baylor Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching in 2019.
A native Texan, Dr. Arterbury grew up attending the First Baptist Church of Van Alstyne and the First Baptist Church of Port Lavaca. In addition, as an ordained minister, he has served Christian congregations in Austin, Waco, and Madison, New Jersey.
He and his wife, Kristin, have two adult children, and they are active members of First Baptist Church of Waco.
